The world ocean day falls on the 8th of June every year focusing on the importance of marine systems and aquatic animals, aiming to gain attention of the public to the conservation of them leading to a sustainable future. It will be celebrated in 2022 highlighting the theme,â Revitalizationâ: collective action for the ocean as the first hybrid celebration of the annual day which is hosted in person at New York and also broadcasted live. The seas and oceans are our greatest source of biodiversity. They cover 71 % of the Earthâs surface and they contain 90 % of the biosphere. Historyđ
The concept of a 'World Oceans Day' was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro . On 5th December 2008, the UN General Assembly designated 8 June as World Oceans Day. Along with UNESCO, other UN agencies such as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), FAO, UNDP; and the International Maritime Organization works for the conservation of marine and coastal system while preventing marine and coastal pollution. Though this day comes annually , this is an issue that needs much attention and approaches oftenly. 90% of big fish populations, and 50% of coral reefs have destroyed which cannot be replenished.
Let us make World Oceans Day more meaningful by making contributions at our levels in saving them. Remember, even the smallest of the acts can prove to be revolutionary.
